I discovered my first grey hair yesterday! I saw it first while seated at a table at the eyeglass place picking up my new sunglasses. I thought perhaps it was the bright lighting in the store that was making the hair appear white. But when I got home and looked again in my own bathroom mirror, it was still there! And it was undoubtedly grey, as it appeared to not blend in texturally with the surrounding hair. I honestly don’t know why this made me excited. My husband, I’m sure, thought I was kidding considering he has had grey hair literally since the day we met 24 years ago. I have anxiously waited to find my first one but knew I would have to wait a while because neither of my parents had grey hair until they were well into their 50s and even early 60s. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I feel like I’m perpetually 20 years old sometimes. Or that I’m the youngest employee at my school despite being the principal. I don’t mind aging. Despite feeling young, I’ve always been eager to grow old. I suppose I could go as deep as saying I’m eager to appear older so that I can prove to others that I’m capable of doing adult things because sometimes I marvel that I’m old enough to do those things. Like, when did I get old enough to be married and own a home and have to worry about things like health insurance? Or it could just be that deep down I want to be one of those old women who are rocking a full head of grey hair, along with their tattoos and clothes full of bright, funky colors that you wouldn’t think an old lady would wear. Whatever other symbolism this grey hair represents is probably true too. But whatever the meaning really is, bottom line, I just think it’s awesome and I can’t wait for a few more to pop out.
