What is the last thing you learned?
That people will help you if you ask. Literally just learned that a few hours ago at work. I have been drowning this week. Busy days at work, combined with monthly hormones made every task on my work to-do list extra stressful. I didn’t ask for help from anyone other than my secretary who only works three days a week. We’re all busy, we all have stuff to do.
But this morning, when one of my coworkers saw my face and could tell that I was suffering, she came down to my office a little later. I shed a few tears and then she did something that made me feel better. She decorated my office tree.
The decorations for March had been sitting on a shelf all week. I had the leprechaun hat pattern and yarn ready to knit a hat for Steve (the skull). But this week made me feel defeated and ready to take the tree home, never to be decorated again.
My coworker put the lights on and hung the ornaments. She took the ribbon from the ornaments box and gave Steve a mohawk. She said it would make me feel better.
Not long after that, when I asked my manager if we could reschedule a meeting because I had a lot to do, she emailed back with a new date for the meeting and a list of things that coworker could do to help me out with other things I needed to do.
They have been telling me all along that they can help. I just never asked because, what if they say no? I would be embarrassed then that I couldn’t do something. Also, I didn’t want to bother anybody with my need for help. I wonder if that’s a trauma response. Whatever it is, that’s how I felt.
Today I learned that they really do want to help. They meant what they said. I just need to remember to ask.
Also, Steve’s mohawk today looks better than any hat I could have made him.
