What activities do you lose yourself in?

Not just a catchy song by Eminem. I can easily lose myself in any of my hobbies. Reading is probably the easiest activity, especially if it’s a fiction book. I’ve been alternating between fiction and non. Having just finished a very lengthy Stephen King book, I’m reading a non-fiction book now. But even then, if it’s a good book, I will still lose myself regardless of the genre.

Knitting and crocheting is another set of hobbies that can consume a lot of my time without me realizing it. In fact, last night was the last night of the crocheting class that I’ve been teaching and since the students all knew what they needed to learn from the class, we sat and crocheted and chatted. Before I knew it, three and a half hours had gone by and the class was finally over (I have not been a fan of the class simply because I hated going back to work after coming home from work).

Here’s another activity that will absolutely make me lose track of time and what is going on around me…organizing. One recent weekend, I cleaned out and reorganized the closet in my office/craft room. It involved taking all the things out of the closet, taking some of it up to the attic, and then putting stuff back in a new organized way. Took me a good part of the day but it didn’t feel like it took that long. My husband was outside putting together his new smoker and so I happily spent hour after hour reorganizing that closet and making more space in the bigger room. You should have seen me last summer when I took inventory of my yarn stash and reorganized it all into labeled bins. It was delightful! Or when I sorted and organized my sticker collection into file boxes with labels. I was in heaven! But that’s just me. I’m an organization nerd at heart. My husband used to joke that I have boxes for my boxes. He’s not wrong. The Container Store is one of my favorite places! Though it’s about an hour drive from where I live so I don’t go often.

It really doesn’t take much to make me happy. Once I get really engaged in something I enjoy doing, I will fully commit and not notice the passing of time. With this prompt coming up on a Friday, it makes me wonder what I can engage in this weekend. Maybe a little of everything.

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
