What do you wish you could do more every day?
When I had just finished grad school last year and was about to leave my job, I was completely enamored with how much free time I had outside of work. No more grad school assignments. No lesson plans or papers to grade. It was heaven! It still is honestly. I felt then that I could do whatever I wanted with my time. I had nothing that I had to do. So much freedom!
To be fair, now that I have an 8-5 job, I have found myself complaining lately that I don’t have as much time for hobbies and things that don’t relate to keeping house. The only reason it’s a problem to me now is because I actually have a goal I’d like to accomplish.
I have started writing a book. But I wish so badly I had more time every day to devote to writing. To be fair, I probably have more time than I realize. I don’t think it’s hard to set aside an hour each day to focus on writing. It’s probably just a matter of being more deliberate and organized with the time I have.
So the main answer to this question is that I wish I had time to write everyday. I write on this blog daily, but this isn’t going to turn into something I can publish in a magazine or turn into a book. In fact, I started this blog so many years ago because I read a book and the reviews of it said that it read like a series of blog posts that they could have read for free. I really enjoyed the book and thought a blog was a good idea.
But I want time to really sit down and explore other types of writing. Not just the book I’m working on, but short stories too. I’ve never thought of myself as being a good fiction writer. Truthfully, I’ve never given it a serious try. I have some ideas that I’d like to try out. I just need to sit down and actually start trying to write them out.
My husband joked with me the other day that he fully supported the idea of me being a famous author so he could quit his job. I told him I’m the one who needs to quit so I have more time to write. He said I have more than I think I do. I’m sure he’s right. Instead of doom scrolling on my phone for an hour when I get home from work, I could easily spend that time in front of my computer creating my own thoughts instead of reading everyone else’s.
The beauty part of this dilemma though, is that there’s no deadline for it. When I was a teacher, I felt like I had to cram in all the fun stuff like writing during summer break or long holiday weekends. Because during the school year, there was no extra time to be had anywhere. But now, if I don’t have time today, I’ll probably have time tomorrow. I was thinking of making Sundays my writing day. That’s fine too. When I was a teacher, Saturdays were for lesson plans and Sundays were for paper grading. Now, they can be for whatever I want.
I’ll get this time thing worked out eventually. In the meantime, I’ll simply enjoy the daily writing I get to do on here. It’s more casual and easy to get out. It does enough to scratch the writing itch. For now anyway.
