LOL!

I feel attacked by this question! I’m 42 years old, I barely use emojis! I still write, LOL and am disturbed and annoyed that Apple has made “lol” autocorrect to lowercase letters when I try to use it as a complete sentence and put a capital L at the front. When I want to express a laughing or smiley face, which are really the only two that I generally feel compelled to use, I will always do this instead 🙂 (the colon and parenthesis apparently autocorrected to a smiley emoji ironically—my point being that I will type out the smiley face with keyboard keys). Though I have gotten some use out of the one where it’s a woman with a hand to her face, that whole facepalm thing. Or the one where she’s shrugging her shoulders. Both of those get used in the work chat a lot.

To be honest, I don’t even know what emojis are available. The news talks about new emojis sometimes when some big update is released. There I sit just completely oblivious to what already existed in that little tab down there with the two or three other emojis I sometimes use.

Maybe it really is an age thing. I just don’t communicate like that. I will absolutely use complete sentences in texts. In fact, whereas many profiles on Threads have people using a lot of emojis to express their different interests and hobbies and beliefs, I have two complete sentences. Maybe it’s the English teacher in me or just the writer. Or maybe it’s the fact that I’m old and didn’t have a cell phone until college, and even then I didn’t start actually texting with that alphanumeric keypad until my second or third year of college. It’s just not something engrained in my history of communication. And honestly, I’m ok with that.
