I dragged my feet with the daily prompt today because once again I saw that I had already answered it when it came around sometime ago. And honestly, my daily habits aren’t very interesting. In fact, I’m pretty sure I talked about them yesterday when I talked about how I keep my life sustainable.
Bottom line, there are really only two things that I can truthfully say that I do every day. It doesn’t matter if it’s a week day or a day on the weekend, I always take my medication in the morning and night. I’ve had attitude about taking medicine in the past…I didn’t understand just how much I needed it and the value it would have in my life. Back then it was just mental health meds, now it’s those, plus some for a variety of physical health issues—blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and one fun one that I take for an issue my doctor said “women of a certain age” have. Good times. But I do make sure I take them because I do see a difference if I don’t. Funnily enough, it’s the one for women my age that I notice the difference first if I forget my meds or if that’s one I didn’t get refilled in time.
The other thing I do every day is relax. At a certain point in the day, I quit. I stop whatever I’m doing and sit on the couch and either pick up my knitting, or scroll on my phone, or read. I have to do that. I get a little stressed and antsy if I go too many days in a row without that little bit of down time every day. That’s actually an understatement. I remember having a full blown break down during my first semester of grad school. One day I’ll start a story by saying, “Picture it—November, 2023–it was my first semester of grad school…” Seriously, that month was personally determined to kill me. When I did end up breaking down, I realized a big reason for it was that I was constantly working and not giving myself that time to rest and decompress each day. Granted, I don’t have that kind of stress in my life anymore, but I’m damn sure I stop and rest each day. Even if it’s just reading in bed until my eyes get too heavy to keep going.
And that’s really it. The two things I do every day. I make them priorities because I’ve seen what happens when I don’t.
