What is your favorite genre of music?
My middle school students asked me one time what my favorite song is. I asked them to be more specific. Like, what is my favorite country song? Or what is my favorite pop song? My favorite song from the 90s? Boy band song? Rap? They were insistent that I pick a song. Honestly, I couldn’t. There are so many to pick from that it’s impossible to narrow down. Same thing with my favorite genre of music.
While I am a child of the 90s, I could say 90s music is my favorite genre. Is a decade considered a genre? Probably not, because even within that time span, there are a variety of types of music. In iTunes I even have a playlist that is just “90s Country Favorites”.
Speaking of iTunes, here are a couple screenshots from my “Random Awesomeness” playlist to prove my point that I just like a little of everything:

As I’ve aged, I’ve noticed I’ve become a lot like my mother when it comes to music. When I was a teenager, she’d hear a random song on the radio and like it and then ask me what it was. I’ll never forget when she asked me the name of that “round and round and round” song. Through questioning and process of elimination, I discovered she meant Limp Bizkit’s song Rollin’. I’m the same way now with songs that I hear. I’m grateful for the Shazam app since I don’t have a teenager I can pester to identify songs for me. I was as patient as I could be with her when she would ask me about songs. After all, she was patient with me when I balked at her first attempt to introduce me to the musical selections of Meatloaf when I was a kid.
Bottom line, when it comes to music, I just like what I like. Sometimes it’s the lyrics that draw me in, sometimes it’s just a good beat. Or it’s the nostalgia that hits me when I listen to songs from my generation. Everybody’s taste is different, and that’s pretty cool.
