If you didn’t need sleep, what would you do with all the extra time?

You know, thanks to perimenopause, and a healthier body free from stress and anxiety (most of the time), I actually don’t need much sleep these days. I can stay up pretty late and not suffer getting up the next morning. Granted, I can’t do that every single night and not expect there to be a day when I’m more tired than usual and need to go to bed earlier.

With that extra, past the usual bedtime time, this week I have been staying up super late rewatching Stranger Things. Season 5 premiers tonight and my secretary and I have been gabbing about the new season for weeks. However, since there have been 3 years since the last season, I needed a memory refresher, as have a lot of fans who have also been rewatching. This week, I got in bed and laid down in the dark with my iPad and air pods and binged through as many episodes as I could. My original plan was to rewatch all of them before watching the new episodes. But these are long episodes, particularly in season 4. I gave up and found a really good fan wiki with very detailed summaries of each episode.

I have finished reading all the summaries and am now eagerly awaiting 8:00 tonight so I can binge the 4 episodes that will be released tonight. If for no other reason than being able to talk to my secretary about it next week because I know she’s going to be watching too.

When I’m not binge-watching something amazing, I think my sleep free time would be spent writing. Nighttime is the part of the day when I am the most inspired. Which is why I asked my artist to incorporate a moon and stars into my journal inspired tattoo that I’m getting on Friday.

Knitting and crocheting are also things I would do in those sleepless overnight hours. I’ve done that before too. On nights where I haven’t been able to sleep, I’ve gotten up and started a new project.

All of these “to-do” ideas are based on hobbies and fun things. Because I spent so much of my daylight hours being productive, I need to draw the line somewhere and allow more time for productivity on things that don’t feel like work or chores.

Truth be told though, I feel like even in a world where I didn’t need sleep, I would still feel like I didn’t have enough time. Maybe that’s a product of my impatience. I have so many things I want to do and I feel rushed to get them done. Perhaps the solution is to slow down and just accept that everybody has a finite amount of time in this world. We all want to do everything we possibly can, but the stress of feeling like we can’t get everything accomplished is counter productive. That’s still not going to stop me from staying up super late and doing all the random hobby-ish things I love.

    1. Thanks! When I met with the artist today, I kept saying, “and then if you could…” There are going to be so many elements to this one!

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
