What was the last thing you did for play or fun?
As an adult with adult responsibilities, the things I do for play are not big things. And they’re not always the same things I would have considered fun when I was a kid. Don’t get me wrong, I still love a good amusement park and will absolutely jump at the chance to ride a roller coaster.
But as an adult, my idea of fun is a lot more tame. My day today is actually going to have some fun stuff.
I’m going to park it on the couch and do some crocheting. I noticed yesterday that the new neighbors I have across the street are Jewish. They have a big blow up, lighted menorah in their yard. Their house is next to the Jewish synagogue that is also on our road. I feel compelled to bring them a welcome gift because the news keeps letting us know that some people are proving that Jewish people have a reason to be afraid. And I don’t like that. So I want these new neighbors to feel safe on our street. I’m going to crochet some dish cloths and dish scrubbies for them and bring them over tomorrow, which I think is the last night of Hanukkah.
Today, my husband and I are also going to corral our dogs and stuff them into Christmas pajamas, and then we (in our own matching pjs) are going to sit them down in front of our Christmas tree and take a picture.
Finally, tonight is the night of lights in a neighborhood next to the apartment complex we used to live in. I used to run in that neighborhood and we discovered that on a Saturday in December, they have one night where all the residents line their driveways and the streets with tea lights in paper bags, making a luminary path throughout the neighborhood. Everyone has their Christmas lights and best decorations lit up and on display. From 6-9 pm, the neighbors walk through and others drive thru to see all the lights. Some neighbors dress as Santa and set up in their driveway to hand out hot chocolate or other treats. We go every year. Last year we missed it since we don’t ever get to that side of town much and so we didn’t see when they had their sign out advertising it. We’ll go tonight and hope our favorite houses are still lit up the way we remember. There are definitely some long time residents in that neighborhood.
This is the Christmas season. There are a LOT of opportunities for play and fun. I’m grateful to be off work for the next two weeks so I can take advantage of any opportunity that comes up.
