Movie/music Monday

Today is a combo movie and music reflection. There are certain songs that I’ve heard lately that made me want to watch a certain movie.

A few months back, Josh and I rented “The Fall Guy”. It’s a movie based on the 80s tv show. It stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. I will watch any movie Ryan Gosling is in, comedy or drama, because… just look at him:

This may be my 3rd favorite Ryan Gosling movie. My other two favorites are: “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and “The Nice Guys”.

“The Fall Guy” is a fun action/romance kind of movie. Fun fact—when I was a teacher, I taught (and became friends) with a lady whose husband is the brother of the director of this movie, David Leitch. So, I have a 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon thing going on with Ryan Gosling, Ryan Reynolds (he directed the second Deadpool movie), Brad Pitt (he directed Bullet Train), and Keanu Reeves (I think he was a producer on one of the John Wick movies). He started out as a stuntman in movies, so I’m guessing he had fun making “The Fall Guy” because it’s basically an homage to stunt performers.

Anyway, the movie is just all around fun, but the soundtrack is a banger!

There are four songs in the movie that instantly make me think of the movie now whenever I hear them:

  • Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)—Phil Collins
  • I Was Made for Loving You—Kiss
  • I Believe in a Thing Called Love—Garry Simpson
  • All Too Well—Taylor Swift (I saw the movie before I started listening to all her albums. When I got to this song I immediately recognized it from the movie. It works so well in the movie too because Emily Blunt makes fun of Ryan Gosling for sitting in his truck crying while listening to the song).

Since the “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” song randomly came on when I was in the car with Josh the other day, I wanted to watch the movie again. So we watched it last night. Like I said, it’s just a fun movie and the best part for me, was the part at the end where Ryan Gosling flips the bird and falls out of the helicopter with the evidence he needed to win the day.

I would like to do the same on my last day at work. I won’t fall backwards out of a helicopter but I will enthusiastically drive out of the parking lot.

Again, good movie, good soundtrack, do yourself a favor and watch it if you haven’t already. Or, watch it again, because it’s just fun. And Ryan Gosling is fun to look at.

  1. I will definitely look into watching this. I remember watching the TV show back in the day. And yes the first two songs you listed are banger! The other two I do not know, but that’s ok, you had me at Phil Collins and KISS.

    1. If you watch until the end of the credits, there’s cameos from the tv show!

  2. Thanks for the tip, I will make sure to do that.

  3. I loved this movie! Did you see Ryan in Barbie? He was fantastic as Ken.

    1. Oh for sure I did! And I totally agree, he was great!

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
