Something on your “to-do list” that never gets done.

Talk About it Tuesday

Have you ever had an antsy kind of feeling? Where you feel unsettled? Maybe there’s a touch of anxiety mixed in.

That’s how I was feeling last night because of things not “done”. There are various meanings of “done”. I was first bothered by our ongoing spare-bedroom-turned-creative-space project. We are almost finished, but there’s still a little bit of painting left to be done. Because of that, there is a lot of stuff crammed, stashed, stacked, and shoved into our dining room. It makes getting to things a little challenging and frustrating.

Another thing that’s undone is my job. I feel that I’m in a state of transition, but there’s nothing I can do to speed up the transition. I had a great interview last Friday, and now I just have to wait and see if I got the job. It’s out of my control now. I still really want to leave my current job and it makes me anxious knowing that I don’t have any other interviews lined up. If I don’t get this job, I am stuck. And I don’t like that feeling. So I think I’ll keep searching for places to apply.

My book is also on my to-do list. I finished one small little thing on the overall to-do list for it. I’m thinking more about the possibility of self-publishing it when it’s finished. Building a platform to satisfy prospective publishers takes a long time. I still definitely want to build my platform. Since I’ll need to promote my book, I’ll need people to see my social media accounts. In the meantime, I’m still trying to get my first publishing credit. I keep putting essays and even a poem out to various publishers. I just need someone to say ‘yes’, just one time. One acceptance will go a long way to making me feel like I can actually do this.

All of these “up in the air” things gave me that antsy, kind of anxious feeling last night. I feel better today though. I recognize that because of my issues with anxiety, things that are out of my normal routine give me the feeling of uneasiness. I did some writing in my journal and that really helped.

So while these things aren’t necessarily on my to-do list, they are things that are in progress and boy I wish they would just hurry up and get done!

  1. As you build your platform and gather your outline I would look into literary agents that deal with non fiction. And maybe send a query or two. Non-fiction/Memoir might not need the same “criteria” as fiction writers for author platforms or whatever the hell. And they can help. That is what I am about to do with the novel I wrote…just put some feelers out to see. It may surprise us.

    1. That’s a good idea! I used to have a subscription to Publisher’s Marketplace. Decided I’d pause that until I’m closer to being done with my book. It’s a really good resource though.

  2. Google has all sorts of wonderful things too.

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
