What’s a thing you were completely obsessed with as a kid?

There are so many memories that I have of things that I was madly in love with when I was a kid. And by “things”, I mean movies, music, and as my husband quickly pointed out…people.

I’ll start with actual things. I had a couple of authentic Cabbage Patch Kids and I was certainly a fan of playing with them. One was named Christina and the other was named Sally—she was the one with the long, yellow yarn hair. Christina had a little tuft of tan yarn on the top of her head and her mouth was open enough to fit a pacifier in it.

I also had quite a collection of Barbie dolls and accessories, complete with a Barbie dream house that had an elevator that you pulled up and down with a string on the side.

I could also add that my original Nintendo game system was something that I played obsessively.

Now, these are the miscellaneous “things” I was obsessed with. The movie, “Dirty Dancing”. I wrote a whole post about how Patrick Swayze was my boyfriend—Patrick and Me. I was way too young to be watching that movie, but I had Boomer parents that didn’t censor a single movie I watched. However, I did get banned from watching the Simpsons after telling my dad to either eat my shorts or don’t have a cow. I also couldn’t buy the Poison cassette tape. I loved the song “Unskinny Bop”, but my mom objected to the line, “What the hell is going on?”

But, you know who I wasn’t banned from listening to? New Kids on the Block. They deserve a place on the “things I was obsessed with as a kid” list. Man I loved them.

Now, back to what my husband’s answer was when I read him this question. His first answer for what I was obsessed with was “boys”. To be fair, he’s not wrong. I was pretty boy crazy. I had a long list of “boyfriends”. And those “boyfriends” were simply whatever boy/man I saw that I thought was cute. I think that list got into the 200s. He did add Cabbage Patch dolls to his answer. So I had a nice balance of kid appropriate things and whatever my boyfriend list was. For what it’s worth, his answer for what he was obsessed with is Star Wars.

When you’re a kid, it’s so easy to get obsessed with things I think. Things—movies, music, toy, people—make such an impression on our young minds that it’s no wonder we want to watch the same movies or listen to the same songs over and over. While I certainly have movies and songs that I will repeatedly watch or listen to as an adult, nothing compares to the intensity of my various obsessions when I was a kid. As a grown up, those things carry with me, but now they come with a hefty dose of nostalgia. Not quite the same feeling as when I was a kid, but a soft, familiar feeling nonetheless.

  1. Oh, I loved my Cabbage Patch dolls. I do not remember their names, though. And then, when Baby Alive came out, my parents got me one for Christmas, and I adored her. That baby doll went everywhere with me. I was also a fiend for my Nintendo gaming console and my Sega Genesis, and all of my books! Ah, good times.

    1. Books!!! How could I forget all my books! Good grief I was crazy about reading too! I love that these things from our childhood are such a shared experience.

  2. I know I didn’t mention it in my post because I had a whole other vibe going, but my curious george doll. Got him when I was 6 for christmas. I still have him and he is in great shape. So this Christmas George will be 50. He sits on top of my small bookcase for all to see.

    1. I remember you mentioning him! I think it was when I posted about my Elmo. He’s old and sits on my shelf too!

      1. Love it

  3. How could you not dance and sing to ‘I’ve had the time of my life’ from Dirty Dancing! Patrick Swayze was the whole package!

    1. Oh for sure! He was definitely on my list of boyfriends. Also, I absolutely made my sisters dance with me like Baby and Penny did when they were rehearsing during the song “Hungry Eyes”.

      1. 😆 must’ve been a fun bonding moment for you and your sisters! 👯‍♀️

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
