There are so many memories that I have of things that I was madly in love with when I was a kid. And by “things”, I mean movies, music, and as my husband quickly pointed out…people.
I’ll start with actual things. I had a couple of authentic Cabbage Patch Kids and I was certainly a fan of playing with them. One was named Christina and the other was named Sally—she was the one with the long, yellow yarn hair. Christina had a little tuft of tan yarn on the top of her head and her mouth was open enough to fit a pacifier in it.
I also had quite a collection of Barbie dolls and accessories, complete with a Barbie dream house that had an elevator that you pulled up and down with a string on the side.
I could also add that my original Nintendo game system was something that I played obsessively.
Now, these are the miscellaneous “things” I was obsessed with. The movie, “Dirty Dancing”. I wrote a whole post about how Patrick Swayze was my boyfriend—Patrick and Me. I was way too young to be watching that movie, but I had Boomer parents that didn’t censor a single movie I watched. However, I did get banned from watching the Simpsons after telling my dad to either eat my shorts or don’t have a cow. I also couldn’t buy the Poison cassette tape. I loved the song “Unskinny Bop”, but my mom objected to the line, “What the hell is going on?”
But, you know who I wasn’t banned from listening to? New Kids on the Block. They deserve a place on the “things I was obsessed with as a kid” list. Man I loved them.
Now, back to what my husband’s answer was when I read him this question. His first answer for what I was obsessed with was “boys”. To be fair, he’s not wrong. I was pretty boy crazy. I had a long list of “boyfriends”. And those “boyfriends” were simply whatever boy/man I saw that I thought was cute. I think that list got into the 200s. He did add Cabbage Patch dolls to his answer. So I had a nice balance of kid appropriate things and whatever my boyfriend list was. For what it’s worth, his answer for what he was obsessed with is Star Wars.
When you’re a kid, it’s so easy to get obsessed with things I think. Things—movies, music, toy, people—make such an impression on our young minds that it’s no wonder we want to watch the same movies or listen to the same songs over and over. While I certainly have movies and songs that I will repeatedly watch or listen to as an adult, nothing compares to the intensity of my various obsessions when I was a kid. As a grown up, those things carry with me, but now they come with a hefty dose of nostalgia. Not quite the same feeling as when I was a kid, but a soft, familiar feeling nonetheless.
