Movie/music Monday
What an interesting question today! And given that it’s Movie/music Monday in my little slice of the blogging world, I’m happy to ruminate on this. I actually have a few movies that I would like to experience again for the first time. I think answers to this question have to be movies that either have an ending that is so beautiful and happy and heart-warming, or a complete twist and shock. With that said, a movie with a happy ending that I just loved and still love…
“Little Miss Sunshine”
I wouldn’t necessarily say this movie has a happy ending, but there’s just something right about how it ended. It won Best Picture that year at the Oscars. It’s not really dark humor, but it kind of is. I don’t know. There’s just something about the fact that every member of the family fails or has failed at something recently and they all come together at the end to make sure Olive doesn’t fail at her pageant. Olive does fail though, spectacularly, but the way they come together to support her, after everything they’ve been through makes the ending dance scene just so touching. It’s like they’ve all healed somehow by the time it’s over. It’s just so good! Back when I was on Wellbutrin and crying over the simplest things, I cried watching the end of this, even though I had seen it many times before.
Now, the movie with a twist at the end…
I would first need to not only erase the movie from my mind, but also erase what everyone told me about the movie. Particularly my friend Cynthia who saw it opening weekend and then at lunch on Monday told me the big reveal at the end. To be fair, I told her it was ok to say it because I probably wasn’t going to see it anyway. I did see it. And it did not have the same effect on me that it had on everyone else who found out that Bruce Willis was dead the whole time because they didn’t tell their friend it was ok to spoil the ending. Also, spoiler alert. My bad. It’s been 27 years, I think the necessity of a spoiler alert expired a few years ago.
Honorable mention goes to “Signs”. Another M. Night Shyamalan classic that Josh and I watch nearly every Sunday evening, or really, any evening when we’ve had a rough day. We watch it so often because of how great a movie/story it is. We fell in love with it so much that we saw it together in the theater twice. One of only two movies that I can remember we saw twice in the theater (“Joe Dirt” was the other one). I actually saw it four times. Twice with Josh, once with his mom, and once with his oldest niece.
