Songs can have varying effects on mood. I think any song is capable of doing something to how somebody feels. It takes a truly good song to change your mood into a good one. Sometimes moods are negative–sad, angry, melancholoy–and if the mood is strong enough, even your most favorite song is not going to make you happy. It can’t always turn a negative into a positive. However, it could lift your mood a little bit. Music is very therapeutic. I’ve said before that I thoroughly enjoy screaming along to songs on my angry music playlist. I scream in my car while trying not break the speed limit too much so I don’t get pulled over and given yet another ticket.
Perfect example of a song that I enjoy screaming along to when I’m particularly mad–“Without Me” by Eminem. That line, “I just settled all my lawsuits, F*** YOU DEBBIE!” is great! Especially because at my most recent job, one of the people who absolutely drove me bonkers had that name. Coincidence? Or the universe bringing me that song at the right time to help me feel better about super annoying and infuriating interactions with her?
Back to the question at hand…a song that puts me in a good mood…I still maintain that I don’t have a song that will completely change a mood of mine and make it good. However, here’s another song that always made me feel good blasting it in the car and “singing” along to it. “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift. It’s off her Reputation album which is all about her fighting back against her critics. That’s one of my favorite albums of hers. Some of my favorite lines from that song… “I’ve got a list of names and yours is in red underlined.” “Honey I rose up from the dead I do it all the time” “I’m sorry, Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Because she’s dead”. If you have followed my blog for any length of time, you can guess why those lines mean the most to me. In a nutshell, I like to think that I have healed myself to the point where people shouldn’t get on my bad side because I will not back down if someone pisses me off. I will give back as much as they give me.
I don’t listen to that one that much anymore. Come to think of it, I haven’t listened to my “inspirational” playlist very much lately. I used to listen to it if I needed help getting through some emotions. That Eminem song is on the list, in addition to my “angry songs” list. I’ve just been generally in a good mood lately. Except when the perimenopause hormones act up and I drive down the road blasting “Dragula” by Rob Zombie because sometimes digging through the ditches and burning through the witches just seems like a good idea. It doesn’t necessarily put me in a good mood, but I feel less angry at everybody when it’s over. So maybe the question should be, what’s a song that always improves your mood? Because in that case, it’s all 72 songs on the “inspirational” playlist. Those songs are all so different. I can’t say that they all improve my mood for the same reason. That’s really the cool thing about music. It means different things to different people for different reasons. And that could be said about one song. Let alone the millions of songs that exist. Or perhaps at this point in history, billions. That’s just the power of music. Life wouldn’t be the same without it.
