What app eats up most of your screen time — and do you even feel bad about it?

I have given up on most apps. Eh. Maybe “given up” isn’t the right thing to say. More like, I quit using them. “Giving up” implies things didn’t go my way on them. Things were fine on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, but the ‘millennial urge’ to disappear from social media was strong one day. Actually, I quit when I started my writing class. I was really only heavily on those apps so I could boost my platform and look good to publishers. I don’t care about that now. I really enjoy the idea that people who only communicated with me through social media now have no idea what I’m thinking or what I’m up to. If they really want to reach out to me, they can read my blog here, or text me if they have my number. I suddenly want my circle to be very, very small.

Having said that, I do enjoy Threads. It’s the nice version of X. That is, if you build your algorithm properly and block enough of the mean people. Heck, I blocked someone today for having a negative opinion about the movie “Dirty Dancing”. I don’t need that kind of negativity in my feed. I enjoy the interactions on there. There is a list of people I interact with on a regular basis. They see my posts and I see theirs. And I also enjoy making comments on random other posts. About 90% of the posts I see are related to tattoos, so I like sharing about my experiences with them.

I scroll Threads multiple times a day for varying lengths of time. I don’t feel bad about it at all and really enjoy my time on there. It’s the one social media account I am keeping up with and since it’s the only one, I just have a good time scrolling and interacting with the crowd on there. What can I say? Sometimes I want to bitch about this hot North Carolina weather and the drought we’re having with other North Carolinians. And sometimes I want to relate to other perimenopausal women about whatever new symptom I discovered. Lately it’s been fun reading the posts about the new episodes of House of the Dragon and all the posts from people who are watching Game of Thrones for the first time. You just have to take some time to build your algorithm to suit your interests. The “block” function is super easy to use and so it’s a very convenient way to make sure you don’t have to interact with party poopers very often.

  1. Definitely do not need any negativity regarding Dirty Dancing. I agree. I do not trust the algorithm of anything anymore. Threads is tied to IG which is now tied to FB which means at any moment big bro Zuck can come in and change it…sucks

    1. It really does! There is a lot of evidence where it’s obvious the weird, unspoken rules on Instagram/Facebook are enforced on Threads. It’s annoying sometimes.

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
