How do you deal with uncertainty?

For me, when I’m faced with a decision that I’m not sure about, as in, do I really want to pay that much for tickets? Or, do I really want to quit my job just because that one woman I deal with all the time is making me mad? When faced with uncertainty of that nature, I deal with it the same way every time. I say, “F*** it” and I buy the expensive tickets. Or I quit my job. In general, I do the thing I really want to do. And then I justify the decision. These are Hamilton tickets after all. I found a new job before, I’ll find one again.

However, the idea of “uncertainty” can run deep. During the COVID pandemic, there was a lot of uncertainty about the disease itself and keeping safe. The day of and the days after 9/11 there was uncertainty about what, if anything, was going to happen next. Would there be more attacks? In those instances, there’s really not much you can do. Those events generated a lot of anxiety and everybody deals with anxiety differently. Me? I watched a lot of news so I could learn what the latest developments were so I could feel better knowing more than I did previously.

Uncertainty definitely has many facets. Though when staring it down when trying to make a decision, the healed version of me is much better at making those choices. And to that I say, hallelujah!

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
