As much as we want to, and as much as some things need to have never happened, there is nothing that needs to be erased from history. Certainly, there are some things that need to be erased, such as the Holocaust, 9/11, whatever started the Covid pandemic–was it really because of someone eating a bat? Or did it get leaked from a lab like in Stephen King’s “The Stand”? Mass casualty events would be good candidates for being erased. But how that would alter our current reality without these events? How does that saying go, those who don’t remember the past are doomed to repeat it? There are many who think what is happening in the United States right now is similar to Nazi Germany. I don’t disagree. However, those of us who are very very afraid of what’s happening right now are afraid because history has shown us what happens in situations like this. We have to learn from our past. We learned from the pandemic. If there is ever another one in our lifetimes, we’ll know how to handle it.
Having said that, let me lighten the mood and share something that, while it isn’t going to be erased from history, it’s certainly not going to be a part of our future any longer. Yesterday I saw on the news that Columbia House has officially gone out of business. First of all, who knew they were even still in business? Apparently they were. So, officially, no more 12 c.d.s for a penny. No more random monthly selections showing up at your door that you had to pay full price for or else. No more getting trapped by the fine print. My mom and I definitely built our music libraries with Columbia House. Music and video actually. They had a club for movies too. As they say, it’s the end of an era, doesn’t matter if I thought that era had already ended. Columbia House was a fun part of history that definitely doesn’t need erasing. Maybe when the internet collapses and streaming isn’t available anymore, they’ll come back with their mail order music deliveries. Hey, history does repeat itself sometimes. It could happen.
