I’m pretty well stocked as far as hobbies go. I knit, I crochet, I read, I write, I scrapbook, I make cards…I’m good. So while I haven’t picked up a traditional hobby like that lately, I have started doing something else that has raised an eyebrow in my house.
In general, I’ve started caring a lot more about my appearance. For a while now I’ve been getting my eyebrows waxed regularly. I never used to do anything about my eyebrows and just let them exist as bushy little caterpillars above my eyes. I’ve also recently made an appointment at a dermatology clinic so I can finally have them remove all the skin tags off the back of my neck and do something about the weird texture of my neck back there. I’ve had that going on for years now. I think the rough texture of my skin is related to diabetes. I’m not sure. But now, I want to do something about it.
This has caused Josh to question why I’m doing this now all of a sudden. I’ve had years where I didn’t care about these things. I told him that I care now because I have the mental capacity to care. For 19 years my number one priority was my teaching/principal job. That was my primary focus. I was somewhere further down the list of priorities. Now that I have a boring job and can focus on other things, I have decided that I want to look nice. I never cared how I looked before. I mean, I made sure my clothes matched decently, but that’s about it.
Now? Aside from the eyebrows and taking care of my skin, I am also accessorizing.

I have bought a large assortment of cheap gold and silver rings from Amazon. I wanted them so that I could wear rings on various fingers like Phoebe from Friends. This is my newest favorite:

I love this ring so much I ordered another one in orange.
I’ve also added more necklaces and earrings to my collection. I recently discovered that the second hole in my ears is still open, so I bought more stud earrings to fill those. I have a third hole on one ear but it’s partially closed. I can’t push through. So I will probably go get it re-pierced sometime.
I am just really enjoying dressing up for work. So the earrings, necklaces, and even bracelets. I’ve been bringing bracelets out of my collection to wear. I have several beaded bracelets that were crocheted for me by a friend. This was the first one she made me, because…orange.

I took the picture of it becuase I was tickled at how it contrasted my tattoos. A beaded, sparkly bracelet on a wrist covered with ink seemed like an oxymoron somehow.
I’m even taking this one step farther. I ordered a set of fake nails from Etsy. They are polka dotted. I don’t like getting my nails painted at the salon because when they do the gel, it really damages the nail underneath. I’d like to try these fake ones and see how I like them. I’m rough on nails so we’ll see how long they last. They’re supposed to arrive today. I’m excited to try them!
I don’t know if all of this counts as a hobby, but I am certainly enjoying the process of assembling an outfit each morning when I go to work.
