The ironic thing about my job and my salary is that I am currently being paid more than I have ever been paid in my life and yet, my job requires me to do less than I have ever done at any job in my life. And that’s fine with me. I’m bored sometimes at work. Right now, we’re in a phase of the year where my coworker and I are basically spending all day every day reviewing applications. The application for medical school is quite lengthy and detailed. I don’t mind it though. I mean, I do towards the end of the day because I get to a point where I think, “If I have to read one more application…” But that’s o.k. because it’s still a job where I pick up my purse at 4:00 and walk out to go home. No packing a bag with stuff I’ll need to do when I get home. None of that.
However, I’d still really like to be a paid writer. If I had my current salary and my job was to write, I’d be good. Since finishing the last essay for my writing class and getting the bug back to keep working on my book, I’m back to really wanting to make a go of being a published writer. The class I took had advice for getting published, to include how to send pitches to editors, what to do with your social media, and even the merits of self-publishing a book. Which honestly, that may be the route I take. Apparently when you self-publish, if your book does well, it can still be picked up by an actual publisher. That’s good to know.
Honestly though, maybe I’d just stick with my current job. My desire to write ebbs and flows. I think it would take some of the fun and inspiration out of it if I had to write every day. But, I’m willing to try it out and see if I’m wrong…
