How do you know if a business is really a front for something more nefarious? Yesterday I was having a conversation with a coworker. I referenced a local chain of hot dog restaurants, called Weiner Works. It’s o.k. I laughed at the name too. As did my oldest nephew and brother-in-law the first time they visited down here.
But here’s the thing about that place, my coworker argued that they’re a front for something shady. And I agree with her logic. That logic being that there are a whole ton of these places scattered throughout the city and no matter which one you go to, there is hardly ever people there. There’s never a lunch rush with a drive-thru line wrapped around the building. How can they possibly have that many locations open with such crummy business? Also, they recently started serving breakfast options. How do they have enough business to expand into the breakfast market?! Someone on Threads suggested that serving breakfast means they can launder money earlier in the day. Also, apparently breakfast food isn’t as expensive to make.
Laundering money certainly makes sense. It’s what Walt did in “Breaking Bad”. Once he clued his accountant wife into his illegal activites, he had her laundering his crystal meth money through the car wash he worked at and later bought…with his crystal meth money.
“Breaking Bad” is an amazing show. So well written. The spin-off, “Better Call Saul” is arguably better than “Breaking Bad”. Those two shows were so good, it’s why I inisted Josh and I watch “Pluribus”. That show was written by Vince Gilligan who also wrote the original two. He’s so good. Totally deserving of the Emmy he recently won for it.
But I digress. Money laundering seems like the best idea for what’s going on at Weiner Works. The question now is…what kind of money are they laundering? Is it drug money? If so, what kind of drugs are being sold around here? Or is it cartel money, like in “Ozark”? Another well-written, dark drama.
Who am I kidding? This is North Carolina. There is nothing nefarious going on at Weiner Works. They’re probably all owned by some older couple who simply enjoy providing good hot dogs to the masses. Or are they?
