If you had to sum up your life philosophy in one sentence, what would it be?

I think I’m going to hijack this prompt today in a spectacular fashion. I just now, as in, about 30 minutes ago, discovered a philosophy that I think sums me up pretty well. And that philosophy is: Don’t dream it, be it. Does that sound familiar? I’ll give you a hint:

This is a line from the song near the end of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I love it because as I’ve said so many time in posts on here, there’s a certain way I’ve always dreamed of being. I’ve dreamed of being the outspoken, heavily tattooed, stylish woman that exudes confidence. Well, I stopped dreaming and actually became her.

Certainly there are other philosophies that I have about life, but I love that one. And I bring it up now because I just watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time. I have a cousin who is madly in love with it and I kept promising her that I would watch it. Every Halloween I vowed to watch it. This year, today, I finally did.

I am already obsessed with it. If I ever get invited to a costume party, I want to dress up as Columbia, with all the sequins and sparkles. In fact, I’d like a Rocky Horror themed tattoo now. I don’t know if what, but I want one.

I was afraid I wouldn’t “get it” because I remember watching the Goonies for the first time a few years ago and though I liked it, I really felt that I had to have watched it in the 80s to get all the hype and fandom. But that wasn’t the case with Rocky Horror. I loved every minute of it and I believe with my whole heart that Tim Curry was amazing and every single scene with him was captivating. I’m sad that I am only now seeing this after he has passed. I’d love to have gone to one of those fan conventions and meet him.

I’m also curious about how this movie was received. Given that it is heavy on the LGBTQ theme and that it came out in 1975. The gay community is much more accepted now, still not as much as it should be. But back in the 70s I’m sure the climate was much different for people in that community. Were there protests surrounding this movie? Or was it so low budget and B-rate that nobody paid it attention? I don’t know but I can see why it has such a cult following now. I need to watch it again with the captions on. I know I didn’t hear some of the lyrics correctly. I’d like to go to one of those midnight showings now where people dress up and throw things at the screen. That would be so fun!

So, mission accomplished on watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show for the first time and also for finding a fabulous lyric that perfectly encapsulates what I have done with my life. Don’t dream it, be it. Maybe that should be my tattoo…

  1. Love love love that you loved this film!!!!

It actually bombed when it came out and then in New York at a movie theater they started showing it at midnight and it became a cult film with a huge following. Look it up, it is awesome!!!!

They still have midnight showings in certain places. I first saw it back in 1988 at a midnight screening at the local movie theater.

    1. I need to watch it again with captions so I catch more of the lyrics. I know I didn’t catch them all. But it is definitely on my bucket list to go to a midnight showing. This was so fabulous!

      1. So good. Of course I am watching it today as well

  2. Not all who wander are lost Avatar
Not all who wander are lost

I’m in until the swimming pool scene . But the soundtrack rules

    1. Yeah, that was a bit much, but the song he sings when he’s the only one in the pool is pretty great.

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
