What are your daily habits?
There are so many mundane things that people generally do everyday that constitute a habit—brushing their teeth, cooking dinner, exercising… The word habit doesn’t invoke a very interesting thought. Of course, there are all kinds of different habits and they don’t have to be dull. I have made a habit out of running. I love to run, though I don’t do it every day, I consider it a fun habit.
When I consider my daily habits, one stands out in particular. It’s the deep couch sitting ritual my husband and I engage in every evening. Nothing interesting about it for someone observing from the outside, but I honestly look forward to it every day. We each have our own spots on the furniture…me on one end of the couch and he on the end of the loveseat, both sharing the same end table with our feet propped up on the coffee table. There’s usually a drink for each of us that we sip on throughout whatever show or movie we end up watching. He is usually surfing the internet from his seat and I am working on a knitting/crocheting project from mine. It’s such a typical old married couple habit, but I love it. There’s a comfort to the familiarity of this daily activity. It’s soothing after a stressful day of work, or even just a day of doing chores around the house. Sitting on the couch folding laundry feels different than sitting on the couch knitting and watching tv with my husband next to me. There’s also a sense of security to it. At that point in the day, we are blocking out the rest of the world, and making sure we are locked in for the night. I feel safe. That in itself is a luxury that I know is not afforded to everybody. It’s funny, because even on the rare occasion that I sit on the other end of the couch, or share the loveseat with him, or (gasp!) sit on the easy chair, it just doesn’t feel the same as when I am on the end of the couch where I usually sit. A daily habit indeed! May all of our habits be ones that give us that same feeling of inner peace and comfort.
