With all the life-changing drama of my old job, I found solace in certain songs. Obviously I wrote about them. (“Inspirational” Playlist) I’ve added a handful more over the past few months. Katy Perry makes up three of the songs on the list. “Roar” is the one that Apple Music told me I listened to the most when they did that year-end round up thing back in December. Even though I’m far removed from that toxic situation, I’m still not completely healed from it and so many of the lyrics in that song, “Firework”, and “Rise” really make me feel something.
The feeling is in my heart, but it radiates from there. It goes out into every part of my body. It’s energy. The kind that makes me feel empowered. Vindicated. Motivated. Passionate. “I won’t just survive. Oh you will see me thrive.” (from “Rise”). How can those words not make me feel an urge to make my voice heard? To keep enjoying the hell out of this new freedom? “I went from zero, to my own hero” (from “Roar”). I slap my chest every time I hear that part. I didn’t think I could do it, but I made the decision to get myself out of that situation and I actually did it.
I could go on and on. Those songs have really been a comfort, to say the least, these past several months. So how could I not take it as a sign that she is bringing her new tour to Raleigh in August? The sign being that tickets for her show went on sale the same day as payday…i.e. today. I have a little Bluetooth speaker in my office and I’ve lately gotten in the habit of listening to the radio through the radio station app on my phone. I knew her show was coming here, but I wasn’t thinking about it until I heard a commercial on the radio advertising the ticket sales. I absolutely stopped what I was doing and immediately bought tickets through the Ticketmaster app. I quickly picked the best seats I could find. Actually, they aren’t the best, but they are really good.
I got two of them, though I’m not making my husband go. In fact, when he got home this evening and I told him I bought tickets, his first reaction was to scrunch up his face and say “Oh God, you’re not going to make me go are you?”. I assured him I would not. Although I think he would if I insisted. After all, before we met, he went to Lilith Fair with a girl he was dating. His gender was definitely in the minority at that show! Instead, I posted about it on Facebook and an old friend of mine who lives close by is going to go with me. I hope she doesn’t mind a concert partner who cries when certain songs come on. Because I already know that I will 100% cry if/when she sings “Roar”. The speakers in my car don’t get it loud enough for me. But to see it performed live? Yeah. I’ll be a blubbery mess. I’m tempted to go ahead and put in for the next day off of work even though it’s not until August. The concert is on a Sunday in a city that is about an hour and a half drive away. I am sure I’ll be too tired to get up early for work the next day.
All of this is to say…it was a good day. Knowing that I’m going to the Katy Perry concert feels like a full circle kind of moment. I can’t wait.
