The word significant can mean something positive or negative. A significant life event could be when I got married. That kind of event influenced my perspective by confirming for me that it’s possible for there to be one perfect person in the world for everybody. My husband and I were together for 13 years before we got married. Being Catholic, we knew we wanted to be sure that we were doing the right thing. Catholics don’t get divorced. I mean, they do, but the Church doesn’t look at them very favorably after that. It’s not a perfect faith, but it was ours and we wanted to be sure. Our wedding, though small, but perfect for us, made my heart happy as it does for most brides. We immediately wondered why it took us so long.
But, significant can also be something like having a miscarriage. Something like that is horribly devastating and makes a woman question so much about herself. Almost three years later and I still have so many thoughts about it.
As far as the passage of time, I can sum that up by simply saying, the older I get, the more my perspective is that I don’t care so much what people think of me. I don’t care for pettiness. After so much time, I have also learned that my life needs boundaries. And I have definitely put them up. Come too close to them and I will use my new found voice to let you know to back up. It’s that whole wisdom coming with age thing. I don’t always feel as old as I am, but I also have moments of feeling much older than I am. That’s just how life goes.
