What is your favorite type of weather?
Oh now this is a good prompt! I will geek out talking about the weather anytime I get the chance! I have turned into my parents when it comes to watching the news, particularly the weather. Hated watching it growing up, hate missing it now.
My fandom of all things weather runs deep. When I taught 5th grade, weather was a big part of the science standards. I took my students to the public library every year to see a presentation by one of the local t.v. meteorologists. It was so cool to get to meet them. The 7th grade science standards also had a big unit on weather. But after Covid, I couldn’t ever secure a meteorologist to come talk to the kids.
There’s one local weather guy who I have been a super fan of for many years. He’s not on t.v. anymore but posts daily weather videos on Patreon. I am absolutely a subscriber! I did get to meet him when he came to a local gardening center last year to give a presentation on North Carolina weather. Actually, I didn’t technically “meet” him. I was in the audience and kept my promise to my husband not to get overly excited and fangirl over him. There wasn’t really a meet and greet or anything, but I resisted the urge to go up to him afterwards and get a picture with him. He’s a legend, simply because of how good he is. He takes the science of weather very seriously. In fact, he’s so good, my parents, who no longer live anywhere near here, will still ask, “What did Greg say?” anytime there’s a hurricane headed our way. There was one year that he was the only one to predict that an approaching hurricane was going to come up through our state, exit off our coast, then make a u-turn and come back to hit us again. It absolutely did exactly that.
That’s all a very long-winded back story of my history of loving the weather. To answer the question about my favorite type, I have to go with stormy weather. Not the kind of storms that spawn tornadoes or other destructive forces such as flooding rain. I just altogether like a good thunderstorm. It legit makes me giddy and happy. Perhaps that’s from the fact that my dad loved thunderstorms and he and I would sit on the porch and watch them roll in. Oddly, I was terrified of them when they would come up in the middle of the night when I would be alone in my bedroom.
Thunderstorms provide a good opportunity to hunker down inside. I’m all for a chance like that. My mother-in-law always insisted that there be no washing dishes or showering or talking on the phone when a storm was coming through. So, for her, that absolutely meant a chance to sit down without guilt and not do any cleaning or other similar tasks.
I’m sure I could probably analyze this more deeply. Maybe something about the loud thunder eliciting excitement because it’s loud and unexpected and it represents…oh I don’t know. I don’t think it’s really all that deep. Thunderstorms are just interesting. They last only long enough to not become annoying. If I have to go out in a storm, it’s less exciting.
Since spring has officially started, they are going to start becoming more and more frequent. So, perfect time of the year to enjoy my favorite weather.
