What gives you direction in life?
There’s a song on my inspirational playlist that I really should take off because I skip over it every time it comes up. It’s a song called, “Stay the Same” and basically, it’s Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block fame singing about how you shouldn’t wish you were somebody else. You are exactly who you’re supposed to be and he hopes we always stay the same. It’s a really good message. In fact, that’s what I used to tell my students when I sent them off to high school. Don’t change who you are, be yourself.
But I’m not taking my own advice now. I’m not inspired by that message. For me, my life, in this exact moment is about change. Figuring out who I really am and what that looks like.
To answer the question, what gives me direction in life is anything that is different from how the first 41 years of my life have been. What drove me to be successful then, isn’t the same as what’s driving me now. What I wanted to do with my life then, is not the same now.
The desire to be different, to do something else with my life besides be a stressed out educator, that is driving me. The fact that I am thinking of writing frequently throughout the day focuses me on my goal of being a published author. I want to feel confidence in myself based on how I look. A shallow goal, but I’ve never really appreciated my appearance until it started improving. Now I want to embrace this new pride in my outer self.
So really, it’s the little (and big) changes I’ve made in my life that are directing me. Because when it comes down to it, any direction that is opposite of where I was, is where I want to go.
