Today is the first day of Pride month and I am SO here and ready to support the LGBTQ+ community. If you’ve followed me for a while, you know I have made it very known that I worked in a Catholic school for way longer than I really should have. I put up with signing the document every year that showed I acknowledged and agreed to all the things in the employee handbook, including the fact that I could be fired at a moment’s notice for doing anything that could be viewed as being against what the Catholic Church believed. That includes showing my support for all LGBTQ+ people. I have silently supported them ever since I knew that there were people like that. I myself am a straight woman, but love is love and people have the right to be who they want to be and love who they want to love and be safe while expressing those rights!
With that finally said out in the open (whew! Finally feels good to say that “out loud”!), I would like to do what I can to show support for the community this month (and all year). I am starting with my local Pride Board to see if they still need volunteers for any of the events they have planned this month. I posted on Threads looking for ideas, so I’m going to list what I find out on this post. I’ll go back and add things as I see what’s out there. If you have any organizations that could use support, or have other good suggestions of what people can do to be an ally, let me know in the comments. I want to do all the things because now I can.
Here’s my list so far…
- Queer Liberation Library: They have a fundraiser going this month and are looking for people to sign up as a team to help.
- Knit the Rainbow: This group collects hand-knit (or crocheted) items like hats, gloves, and scarves to keep homeless LGBTQ+ youth warm in the cold months in New York.
- Fayetteville Pride: This is the organization in my city in case any of you are near where I live.
- Abstractbyrabrams.com: Abstract art from a queer owned business where a portion of all sales are donated to the queer Trans Project. Free shipping over $50 and 15% off when you sign up for the mailing list.
- Kind Cotton: Pride merchandise from a company that says every purchase provides a book to a child.
