What countries do you want to visit?
I have a very simple answer for this that I will immediately retract, and that is, ALL of them! Though not really ALL of them. I have great enthusiasm for visiting other countries mainly because I have never been to another country. In fact, I’ve never been off the east coast of the United States. A world traveler I am not. But I want to be!
I would start in Europe. I want to visit England because I’m perpetually fascinated by all the English actors who play characters that are American. What do you mean half the people on The Walking Dead are English?! Rick Grimes too?! And Dr. House??? That was my first introduction to Hugh Laurie. Had no idea. So by that, I have a very romantic idea of the United Kingdom. I want to visit the touristy places and try a traditional English breakfast, you know, the one with beans on toast.
I’d also like to go to Italy. Mainly for the food. My husband and I have watched many episodes of Stanley Tucci’s show where he travels around Italy eating and cooking the food.
While in Italy, I’d like to visit Vatican City. I’m Catholic and while not as practicing as I was when I worked in a Catholic school, I still cried when Pope Leo XIV emerged on the balcony after the white smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel chimney. To be in St. Peter’s Square when the Pope does the weekly blessing thing he does would be amazing!
I also need to visit a country in the southern hemisphere. You know, to see the toilets flush in the opposite direction and all that. Seriously though, I do want to go south of the equator. But not Australia! My post about the mammoth spiders down there should be enough of a reason to avoid that country altogether. I do, however, want to visit New Zealand.
Because of the online knitting group I’m a part of, I actually have friends that live in New Zealand. Haven’t ever met them in “real life” but we’ve interacted a great deal online. It would be awesome to meet them. Another awesome perk to visiting the land next to the land down under, would be buying possum yarn from the place where possum yarn is made.
Yes, there is really yarn made from possums. But the New Zealand kind of possums. Those possums are not welcome and are actually quite heavy in population so yarn companies are encouraged to make yarn out of their fur, as a way to control the population, in a very non-Bob Barker kind of way, if you know what I mean.
Again, these are not American opossums. Two different animals.

To be fair, the yarn pictured is a blend of merino wool and possum, but there is actual 100% possum yarn. I’ve had some in my stash. I think the company that made it went out of business though.
New Zealand would serve two purposes…I could meet my online friends and come home with some really awesome souvenir yarn.
Honestly, I could come home with great souvenir yarn from any of the countries I talked about. Germany! I’d have to put Germany on the list simply for Stephen West and his yarn store. I’ve made some of his patterns, they’re very unique. Just look at him! How can you not see a guy like that and immediately want to visit his yarn store???
Honestly, I could go on and on. Just give me a passport (which I sadly don’t even have) and a credit card with no limit and let me explore the world. That’s not asking for too much, right?
