What’s the most delicious thing you’ve ever eaten?
The most delicious thing you’ve ever eaten?! How can I possibly choose?! My husband is a foodie. He doesn’t just like food, he makes the most amazing food too. And since I’m one of those old people who annoy young people by taking pictures of their food, I have a lot of pictures of meals my husband has made. Seriously, one of my students one time said that old people needed to stop taking pictures of their food. Whatever, kid. My husband is as much about the presentation as he is about the flavor when he cooks. Enjoy these drool-worthy meals, which are really only the first few at the top of my camera roll. I have so many more!

There are other pictures…the chicken Parmesan, breakfast omelets, so many! And every meal was delicious and honestly, better than any meal in a restaurant.
However, I think the timing of meals is also a factor in how delicious they end up being.
There are two instances of meals that are simple and yet contained the absolute, most satisfyingly delicious food. One meal was just a platter of fried fish, coleslaw, and hush puppies from a mom and pop fish restaurant. The other meal was at a Kentucky Fried Chicken that had a buffet. Pretty boring food in comparison to the delicacies my husband has made in the past. But the timing of those fried meals was everything.
They both came on different days when he and I were on our way home from the beach. We had gotten up early—before the sun, to drive the two and a half hours to the coast to catch the first ferry to the island we would spend the day on.
The ferry was just a big pontoon boat, no cars, just people with backpacks and beach chairs. It would let us off on one side of the island—called Bear Island because it is literally bare. Just a 1-2 miles island with nothing on it but sand dunes and a bath house with restrooms and a snack stand. We had to walk a half mile up a trail to the ocean side.
We’d walk about half a mile more to a part of the beach where there were no people, well past the lifeguard area. For the entire day, we’d sit in our beach chairs and alternate reading with strolling down the beach and splashing around in the water. We always took a little cooler with drinks and sub sandwiches we’d make at home. We’d either bring along chips or grapes to have with them.
Around 2 or 3:00 we’d pack up and walk back to the inlet side of the island to catch a ride back to the mainland on the ferry. In the summer, the ferries ran every half hour. By that point, we were hot and sweaty. Our skin was sticky with sunscreen and sand and we were just plain exhausted. And hungry. Our sandwiches long digested and burned off by the energy the sun also sucked out of us.
If we were hungry enough, we’d stop at the fish place as soon as we left. It was just down the road from the state park where we rode the ferry.
If we could wait a little bit, we’d stop at the KFC with the buffet which was about halfway home.
No matter which place we stopped, the meal was just as good. Satisfying in a really indescribable way. The only thing better was the cool showers we would take as soon as we got home.
We’ve obviously had KFC at other times, and it really doesn’t hit the same way it always did when we ate it on the way home from the beach. We were sad to see that the one with the buffet at the midpoint of our journey had closed and is something else now. That’s ok though. As far as we know, the little fish place is still there and we are determined to go back as soon as we go on another beach day trip.
