Are you seeking security or adventure?

Security or adventure? I think that depends on the definition of security. These two aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. Although, sometimes they are. When I went skydiving, I was seeking adventure. But security was very much not guaranteed. In fact, all that was available by way of security was the conversation I had with the expert strapped to my back before we jumped. He assured me that he had done this many times and that he very much loved his wife and kids and would never do anything to jeopardize his life. Because we were jumping together, protecting his life meant protecting mine too. Despite that, there was no actual guarantee that I would survive the jump. The parachute center had their own security in case I did, in fact, come out of the jump very badly. They knew they weren’t going to be sued by me or my family because of the paper I signed at the beginning.

Aside from jumping out of an airplane, I think security and adventure can coexist. It just depends on what type of security is being referenced. Financial security is what allows people to have adventures. Well, the kind of adventures that involve traveling and doing big, fun things.

Me personally though, at this moment in my life, I actually don’t know what I’m seeking. I was in my very early 20s when I went skydiving. Not to say I won’t want to do something crazy like that again, I just don’t want to right now.

As far as security, I would like financial security, which I have. I feel safe in my home and as long as I don’t go to certain areas after dark, I feel fairly safe and secure in my city. To go deeper, I feel secure in my emotions and mental health. That’s been a primary focus of my life since my first diagnosis when I was 17.

What I’m seeking is to continue all that I have. My definition of security might change. And when I feel adventurous again, I might have a different idea of adventure than something dangerous like jumping out of an airplane. For now though, I’m good with where I am. My life right now is all about going with the flow. We’ll just see how it goes from here.

  1. Right? You can have both. Doesn’t need to be all or nothing.

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
