What do you listen to while you work?

When I work, there are a variety of things I listen to. It really just depends on what type of work I’m doing. When I was a teacher and worked on lesson plans on Saturday afternoons, I always watched one of a few favorite movies. “You’ve Got Mail” and “The Devil Wears Prada” were the two I mostly watched because I knew them so well that I didn’t really have to actually watch them. I listened to them. They were good background noise. And it was always my goal to finish my lesson plans before the movie was over.

If the kind of work is housework, I have a few playlists on iTunes that I listen to. (Is it even still called iTunes? Or is it Apple Music now?). If I have a lot of dishes to wash (no dishwasher in our kitchen), I will often listen to the Hamilton soundtrack.

If I need to do something boring and mundane, I will put this on. I often listen to it on long, solo car trips. Before the craziness of my summer work schedule started, I sometimes listened to this in my office to pass the time. It’s like watching a movie without needing a t.v. Although, we did used to have a little t.v. in our kitchen for watching movies while washing dishes. But we got tired of the counter space it was taking up.

Other playlists that I rotate amongst when doing housework include:

Just a big collection of random songs from all generations that I really like. Though most of them are from the 90s.
Only about 3 or 4 of these songs are actually religious. The ‘inspirational’ word for the title of this collection is simply due to the overall message of these songs or even just one lyric that stands out to me. “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley is even on here because of the line “Who do you think you are? Ha ha ha. Bless your soul.”
These are the songs that make me scream along very loudly as I listen. It’s almost therapeutic.

Back during my running days, that kind of ‘work’out had me listening to this one:

Gnarls Barkley makes an appearance on this playlist too. And also, yes, that is “Gangnam Style” by Psy. Listening to it makes me want to move and dance. It was good motivation while I ran.

Lately though, I found something else to listen to while I do dishes or other random housework type things. The friend I had lunch with on Friday told me about the Moth.

It’s apparently an organization where people simply tell stories. True stories. Themoth.org They have a player, kind of like a podcast where you can listen to episodes and radio hours of people telling stories. I listened to one of their episodes and it was really good! In fact, at my friend’s insistence, I submitted a pitch to their pitchline. I feel good with the written word, maybe I can do good with the spoken word too?

I haven’t gotten into podcasts all that much. I feel like you need to have time to devote to listening to a podcast episode and sometimes the dishes or housework just don’t take as much time. Or I’d rather listen to music.

With all of this that I listed, I just have to say, teenage Sarah would be absolutely floored by all of the choices! She would marvel at how easy it is to create a playlist versus making a mix tape of random songs or burning a c.d. What she would have given to have an iPod back then! Having such incredibly easy access to all this music and storytelling and fun entertainment choices is just really cool. Makes me want to listen more even when I’m not working.

  1. While I loved making mixed tapes, playlists are so much easier. And I love to tool around on Spotify and listen to what other people add to theirs.

    1. They really are so much easier! I’m not on Spotify but I like the idea of seeing what other people have on their playlists!

      1. I use the free version. I only have to deal with ads and my playlist is always on random. But that’s cool, I don’t mind random

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
