What’s the story behind your nickname?

I don’t really have any nicknames. I had one when I was a kid…my dad called me a weird one and still did well into my adulthood. If I was still in contact with him now, I’m sure he would still call me that. There was a teacher in high school who called me Sarah Mack because my maiden name starts with a McD. The AOL screen name that I had when I met my husband there (“there” being on AOL)…was Jecfreak. The Jec stood for James Eugene Carrey. I was a big fan. Kind of obsessed through my teenage years and a little beyond.

The screen name I have on the knitting website I belong to has the word cinnamini in it. I had a hamster once that was cinnamon colored. Cinnamini was kind of cute sounding, even if that hamster was mean and died early in an unfortunate cage incident where basically one of my mother-in-law’s dogs knocked the cage off the shelf and the little fella inside got a tiny bit smooshed to death.

I got called orange turtle by my former principal/“mentor” for a couple weeks when the staff at my old school found out that my personal email address had those two words in it. My favorite color is orange. My favorite animal is a turtle and so my students always told me I needed to get an orange turtle.

Um, let’s see… I guess I can tell you the story behind the name of my blog…Middle-aged Maverick. Actually, there’s really no story there. A maverick is an unorthodox or independent minded person and that’s how I consider myself. When I first started this blog I also thought of myself as middle-aged. My husband didn’t agree. I definitely felt middle-aged, but he was right. At the time, I was in my early 30s. Google says middle-age is 40-60. So, technically I’m there now.

Nicknames are fun and everything, if they’re based on something playful and fun and not mean-spirited or based on something embarrassing that happened. I just don’t really have a nickname and I’m ok with that.

  1. Love the orange turtle name though…it’s excellent

    1. Thanks! I get compliments on it a lot if I’m at a store and give an email address for whatever reason.

  2. Orange Turtle sounds like a cocktail 🍸

    1. Omg it really does! Lol! It should probably have Cointreau in it then. That’s the orange flavored one right?

      1. Or Grand Marnier or Triple Sec.

      2. I forgot about those!

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
