Your life without a computer: what does it look like?

Another prompt that we had exactly one year ago today. And here, again, is what I wrote a year ago:

It’s pretty ironic that we are answering the question about what life would look like without a computer…on a computer.

That was my entire post, lol! Maybe I just wasn’t feeling it on the 2024 version of October 2nd.

There’s a lot that would be different about my life without a computer, I mean, social media for example…wait, hold on. Does the question mean that I myself do not have a computer in my possession and everyone else does? Or does it mean computers don’t exist? Because those would elicit two very different responses. And with that said, our cell phones are basically mini-computers now, so would I still have my cell phone? Ack! So many parameters to this question! I was initially going to talk about my specific day today and what it would look like without a computer, i.e. listening to Taylor Swift’s music on a c.d. player and getting on the phone to tell my friends what I thought of her songs. It would certainly take a long time for the 1,732 people who follow me on Threads to find out my thoughts.

I don’t even know how I would do my job. I sit in front of my computer 90% of the day. Computer use is so integral to my job that I have two monitors on my desk, which, I never had until I took this job and now I can’t imagine working without. Like, it’s a big deal.

This is way too complicated to answer. How about I just say, life without a computer would be the good ole’ days. My good ole’ days were the 90s. I read a LOT of books back then. Without computers or social media now, I could read a lot more. I could knit a lot more. I could live in a lot more peace, honestly. A lot of times I feel compelled to write a blog post or say something on social media. I do it every day. I have a streak going. What would happen if I broke the streak?! Sometimes I really don’t feel like posting, but I do, because…the streak. I don’t think it’s a bad thing though. I love writing. Computers help me do that more efficiently and effectively. Though I still do a lot with actual pen and paper. You’ll never get me to switch to a digital journal, just sayin’. And social media certainly helps get my thoughts out there. I feel this about to take off in a direction of the pros and cons of social media and technology and then A.I. is eventually going to enter the chat and this post will get really long and really ramble-y.

Suffice it to say, I’m good with computers and all that comes with that technology. I’m also good without them. I’m 43. I’ve had access to this new fangled technology for about half my life. That means for the first half, I got along just fine and enjoyed myself. Didn’t know what I was missing, but still had fun anyway. So, life today without a computer? It would take some adjustment, but I’d be fine. My 23 year old secretary on the other hand, whose love language is TikTok I think, I’m not so sure.

  1. Chef’s kiss 👌

  2. Lol…exactly the same…if we never had computers these new generations would just be living like we did, which would be awesome for them. If they went away???? I don’t even know what they would do.

    1. They would not function well at all, lol!

  3. “Computer use is so integral to my job that I have two monitors on my desk, ”

That part! I have one computer/monitor setup I use for my daily job where I call and confirm our patients for their MRIs and CTs and various other communications and assigned tasks.

The other computer/monitor setup is used for uploading patients’ images to CDs, creating digital files, and scanning any prior images from past scans outside of our organization.

I wouldn’t be able to do anything without a computer at work. At home, I could get by, but I wouldn’t want to. Lol.

    1. Yes!!! And I am particular about which task is on which screen! My email is always open on the right side. It would feel like chaos if it was on the left.

      1. Haha. Funny! My email is always open on the computer I use on my right side as well.

      2. As it should be! 🤣 Honestly, I think I just prefer it because that’s how it automatically pops up and so that’s what I’ve gotten used to.
