You get to build your perfect space for reading and writing. What’s it like?

Last year, I had this to say about my perfect space for reading and writing:

“…the room that I have dedicated as my “craft room” is a haven for me. It’s the bedroom in the back of our house. Being back there means it’s a little secluded from all the passing cars and dog walkers that go by in the front. It does face the practice fields against our back yard that belong to the high school, but I don’t mind. I almost find it comforting to have the kids back there practicing soccer. It’s fun when there’s a big game going on in the stadium because then I can hear everything that goes over the loudspeaker. It’s also literally the coolest room in the house because the towering branches of our backyard magnolia tree extend over it providing shade from the searing summer sun.

What I love the most about this room is that it’s perfectly me, trinkets and goofy little souvenirs on the bookshelves and all. I have all of my books, yarn, and other crafty supplies in there. I have a desk with a very fancy office chair that was a gift from my husband a few Christmases ago… I have a big writing project in mind…to be frank, I’m going to write a book. And this is where I will do that. At my desk that faces the backyard. With my corral of pens and a large computer monitor that will be delivered today so I don’t have to squint at my laptop monitor, this will be where I pour my heart and soul into what I’ll write. I can’t wait.”

One year later and this is still my perfect space for writing. Well, it will be. My husband has spent this past year really getting into surf fishing and so now the room has become a shared space for his hobby and mine. And while the combination has given me slight anxiety lately simply because we hadn’t figured out a good way to keep everything organized, we have now. A little project for this weird time between Christmas and New Year’s will involve a trip to Ikea to get some more bookcases that we can use to get organized again.

Hopefully this week this space will turn into the place where I will be able to write again, and also record videos. I’ve ordered some things to help with that. To include a few backdrops and a chair and a small, collapsible table for when I need it. I’m eager to return to this space so I can truly get to “work” on all the ideas I have. Though this won’t really be work. It’s going to be creative heaven for me. And, to tie in yet another Hamilton lyric, this is how I feel about this haven I’m creating:

Sorry for the earworm Hamilton fans! Happy Saturday!

  1. Can’t wait to see what the finished room looks like. I miss IKEA.

    1. I will definitely take pictures when finished! Also, they won’t even ship to Hawaii will they?

  2. No they do not. I checked as soon as I got here and realized hawaii didn’t have one

    1. Bummer! Ours is 3 hours away, a day trip, but at least in the same state!

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
