I watched the Super Bowl yesterday. I didn’t win anything in the Super Bowl squares game my sister organized. If the Patriots had gotten a field goal or the Seahawks got another touchdown, I would have won the pot for the final score. Oh well.

The game was what it was, a game. But now, that halftime show?! That was impressive and exactly what we needed to see. I had never heard Bad Bunny’s music before this performance. I remember when he first became popular, the Spanish teacher at my old school took notice because she is also from Puerto Rico. She had the idea that she could play his music in her Spanish classes. She quickly learned that his was not the kind of music for sharing with kids at school.

Last night though, he proved that his music is the kind for sharing with and uniting everybody. The knowledge I learned in the Spanish classes I took in high school and college is long gone. But I was able to recognize the cultural heritage he was sharing.

The end was the most profound. Having his performers carry flags of all the American nations and saying them out loud along with the message on the Jumbotron in the back. The message about love being more powerful than hate. Seeing that gave me chills. How can there be so much hate and criticism for a performer with that kind of message?

I think I’m going to add some of his songs to my playlist in Apple Music and read the translated lyrics so I know what his songs are actually about. Whatever they’re about, I know they’ll be amazing, just like his performance last night.
