Music/Movie Monday
I’ve posted before about how the movie “Signs” is the go-to Sunday night movie for Josh and me. I can’t explain why that’s our comfort movie, it just is. But we actually have a handful of movies that we’ll rotate among when needing a background noise comfort movie. One of those is “Super 8”.

I put it on last night because we hadn’t seen it in a while. I remember I used to always enjoy watching it in the summer because in the beginning of the movie, the kids are walking out of school on the last day before summer break. As a teacher I always appreciated that scene because I felt as good as those kids on the last day of school.
But last night I wanted to watch it because it reminded me a little bit of the Project Hail Mary book I’m reading. Really only because both of them feature an alien.
The thing about “Super 8” is that it was produced by Steven Spielberg. J.J. Abram’s wrote and directed it. Both of these men tell great stories and this movie is just a really good story. I can’t remember which of the men involved, maybe it was Spielberg, who said the movie is based on how he would go around with an 8mm camera as a kid and make movies, just as one of the kids in the movie does.
There’s a lot of depth to each of the characters. It’s not just a story about a train crash and an escaped alien. There’s so much more to it, more like how these particular people are dealing with life events and there just happens to now be a mystery to solve in the town.
Usually on Sundays, we never get through the whole movie. We end up turning it off halfway through and going to bed. Since I’m off today, and since I took a great nap yesterday, I stayed up later and I watched the whole thing. The great storytelling of it made me want to try my hand at writing a short story. My day is not over, there’s still time and I do plan on getting some writing done…maybe today is the day I give fiction a try. To be fair, I don’t anticipate telling as good a story as Steven Spielberg or J.J. Abrams did with “Super 8”, but even they had to start somewhere.
