Talk About it Tuesday
And since I didn’t talk about it on Music/movie Monday, I’m going to use today to rave about the movie “Project Hail Mary”.

Josh and I went to the matinee on Sunday. We were in a theater that boasted a Dolby sound system. I thought theaters always had that, but apparently this theater had speakers so good you could feel the sound in your seats at certain points. And with a movie that had explosions and rockets and adventures in space, there were plenty of opportunities for us to feel the sound.
It was a really good movie. I don’t think I’ll end up watching it on repeat like I do with “The Martian” (both book versions written by the same author). But I still enjoyed it. Though, to be perfectly honest, I think I would have enjoyed it more had I not read the book first. There were moments in the movie that were obviously meant to create suspense and dramatic effect. However, since I knew what the outcome was going to be, I didn’t feel suspense or as much emotion as I think others did upon seeing it.
Also, I think the movie makers were as faithful to the book as possible. If they aligned the book and movie 100%, the movie would be six hours long. I’m sure. There was a lot more science in the book. But the movie cut what was necessary without diminishing the overall story. And the end was not changed as I thought it was according to something I saw in a trailer. The end teared me up and warmed my heart just as the book did. You can’t help but smile after you see the very last scene before the page goes blank or the movie cuts to the credits.
Josh wasn’t such a fan because he said he doesn’t care for movies that go back and forth with flashbacks like this one does. I can see how that is something that a person doesn’t like. For this book/movie though, it was necessary. Like, it would be weird if it wasn’t going back and forth.
When this comes to streaming, I’ll probably watch it again. With breaks this time though. It was a two and a half hour movie and by the time it started, we had already been sitting through about 30 minutes of previews and commercials. I’ve sat for long tattoos before, but even then I stood up and took breaks. I didn’t want to get up and walk to the bathroom during this. I certainly didn’t want to miss anything.
All in all, good movie. I highly recommend everyone either seeing it, or reading the book. Though, even as I read the book, knowing Ryan Gosling was cast as the main character, I am convinced the author pictured Ryan Gosling as he wrote the book. You can’t tell me otherwise.
