“Something Good” Sunday
This week was a long one! I worked a full day yesterday, and that threw off the rhythm of my weekend. But, Josh being as amazing as he is, did all the things yesterday that I normally do on Saturdays…laundry, washing dishes, etc. He asked me before I left what I was wanting to get done that day and he had done it all by the time I got back. I’ve taken tomorrow off since it was a full day yesterday so I’m looking forward to that. I’m debating how productive I want to be tomorrow. I think my definition of productive is going to involve significant time writing and I’m really needing to organize my yarn and project bags. I could do that. There’s a tv in our creative space/office room that I could easily put on a favorite movie while I do that. Or listen to my ‘high school nostalgia’ playlist as I continue on my writing project.
In the meantime, those aren’t the ‘good things’ I want to focus on for today. The first good thing is that my senior kitty, Faye, is doing much better than she was on Thursday when I rushed her to the vet. She is eating again and she seems to be back to her old self. I mean that almost literally. She’s old and while ‘back to normal’ is the typical expression, she’s not really normal at 19 years old. She definitely has the symptoms of old age, but she is back to her normal. I am scheduled to take her back to the vet for a follow-up tomorrow, and I’ll be talking to them about medicine possibilities to help her not suffer in pain with her arthritis. To show just how “back to normal” she is, I snapped a quick picture of her snuggling in my armpit this morning. The mornings are usually her snuggliest time with me. At night, she stays by my side, down near my hip until I fall asleep, and then she’s down by my feet for the rest of the night. This morning, I woke up around 10:00 and then laid in bed for about another hour and a half scrolling my phone because I didn’t want to disturb her. I’m trying to soak in as much snuggle time as I can with her before that time is up.

The other good thing for this week came after my work day yesterday. While we are all working remotely until May 18th when we can move into our new building, it was an “all hands on deck” event yesterday. Without going into detail about what it was, I can say that it involved all of us interacting with “potential customers/clients” all day. This was the first time that I really worked with the other people in my department without just seeing them on a screen during a Teams meeting or meeting them in person briefly last week when we worked in our temporary offices for a few hours one morning.
And here’s the thing I noticed about my team, they’re all good people and there’s no drama. I was interacting with everybody in the department yesterday. Even the guy at the tippy top of the food chain. His position is not labeled “president” or “CEO” but that’s basically what he is for our area. And he is a genuine guy. Clearly loves what we do and is enthusiastic about all of it. Very approachable too. I didn’t feel nervous around him given his title and position. I didn’t feel that way around anybody. Not even the other people who are higher up and work closely under him. Granted, this is only the end of my second week. But you can just tell these things. I’ve gotten a feeling for how my supervisor and someone close to her level feels about a couple of the other people. But those feelings are more annoyance, I think, not malice. I don’t get the sense that there’s gossiping and trash talking going on when those people aren’t around. There’s no group chat with work memes being sent back and forth. At least, I don’t think there is.
My supervisor did let me and the other new person in on the drama that unfolded with “previous leadership”. That drama seemed more familiar to what I’m used to. But the thing is, the people who were responsible for that drama were removed from positions of leadership. So their drama no longer affected the team in a negative way. Very unlike my old job where deaf ears were turned all over the place. I’m nearly certain that nothing happened as a result of the complaining I did to HR and the fiery exit survey I sent to the higher ups. At my new job? I think what we’re doing is too important for drama. The people I work with are hard core serious about our mission and I think we’re all genuinely in this together and don’t have time for negativity. Certainly they’re not perfect. And I’m already learning the quirks and personality traits of the people I’m working with, but here’s the biggest difference…the air is clear with these people.
At my old job, there was tension and frustration when talking about the higher ups and elements of our job that were difficult and stressful. My team was excellent, but there was a lot of complaining—to be fair, I took part in a lot of it and I quit because of the things I complained about. But here? There’s none of that, and I honestly think that even when we’re eventually in our new office together every day, there still won’t be any of that. If there was, I think I would have felt it yesterday in the moments when our “potential customers/clients” weren’t around. I can really see myself enjoying this job. I can also see myself being here for a while. Maybe until retirement, or until my writing makes me rich enough to not need to work anymore. This is a good place. These are good people. Fun fact…they still don’t know about my tattoos. I almost want to see how long I can go without them ever seeing them.
