What do you love now, that you hated when you were younger?

So many things about being a grown-up are reminiscent of when I was a kid, except many of these things are opposites. When I was a kid and all the way up through high school, my parents were religious viewers of the evening news. I hated watching the news! But there they were, every evening from 5-6:30 watching WRAL, the local news channel in my part of North Carolina. I don’t recall what channel they watched when we lived in Georgia. Now, I wouldn’t say I currently love watching the news, because with the state of the world right now, the news inspires more negative feelings in me than it did before, so I try not to watch it as much. However, I do watch it at least once a day. My favorite local channel, WRAL like my parents watched, has news from 4:00-6:30pm. The national evening news is on at 6:30 and then there’s another news broadcast at 7:00pm. It’s probably a little overkill, but I still watch most of it. They started doing the 7:00 broadcast during the Covid lockdowns. Entertainment Tonight used to be on in that time slot and since nothing was happening in entertainment, the local news took that spot to broadcast a report about Covid. They titled it, “Facts Not Fear” and it was supposed to debunk all of the frightening news about Covid and explain what was really happening. After Covid, they kept that time slot and now it’s 30 minutes of commentary on major local stories with viewer input. Right now their focus is on the severe drought we have going on in the state. The fact that I just wrote a paragraph analyzing what my favorite local news channel does with their time slots, and just the fact that I even have a “favorite” local news channel really says all that needs to be said about how I feel about watching the news now versus when my parents had it on at home. I don’t know what flipped the switch in my head, but somehow I ended up being a local news junkie like my parents. I even pay a monthly subscription to Patreon to get daily weather updates from the meteorologist who was on WRAL since the 80s and all the way up to about six or seven years ago when he left. I don’t know what to say. I’m a fan.

  1. I like to hear a little local news around the islands but around the world…nope I pass. I love the patreon subscribe for the weatherman.

    1. Yeah, I definitely have to limit how much I watch sometimes.

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
