I’m sure I’ve received lots of advice over my lifetime. It’s hard to think of all that I’ve received and what the best was out of that, so I think I’ll go with the most recent. Well, recent as of about five months ago.
I was desperately searching for a new job. I had put in applications everywhere I could think of and was just not getting any response. I had even put in applications for three different job postings at the university I’m currently at. I was beginning to lose hope on finding anything before the summer. I definitely wanted to be gone from my job before I had to start the summer kids program again.
But then I got a text from a former co-worker. She and I became work besties and in January of this year, she jumped ship and started working at the university I’m at now. She had been in a meeting where someone mentioned that my particular department was still trying to hire for my position. She sent me a link to the job posting and told me to apply. I was skeptical. I told her I already had three applications in at this school and had gotten no response. Her advice? Just apply anyway! So I did. And I was contacted the very next day for an interview. Now, I’m in my fourth month working here.
She and I were on the phone yesterday after work getting caught up. We were talking about what must be going on at the place we used to work and concluded it must not be going well based on what we had heard. We said, “but we don’t work there anymore.” And we laughed and laughed. Seriously. We laughed. We always laugh when we talk about how good we have it where we are now versus where we were.
So, her advice was definitely the best I’ve received in a while. It’s very similar to the advice Josh gave me when I was looking for a job the time before this. I had applied for the job at my old place, but I got a rejection email. I then saw the job was reposted about a week later. Josh told me to apply again anyway, even though I had been rejected once. Again, I was skeptical, but I submitted my application and resume a second time. And I was ultimately hired. I found out later why I was rejected for the first time and why the job was posted a second time. Major drama where that was concerned.
Advice doesn’t have to be a super profound statement on your life. Sometimes even the simplest advice is what has the most impact. Just a friend telling me to apply for a job was all I needed for yet another life changing moment. My job may be kind of boring right now, but I’m still damn glad to be here.
