Movie/music Monday

I have made repeated references to my “Inspirational” playlist on Apple Music, and also my “High School Nostalgia” list. But there’s one list that I have failed to mention. And that is the list of movies we own on Amazon Prime. It’s like a playlist. When there’s nothing on t.v. we want to watch and no new episodes of whatever shows we’re watching, we usually turn to our list of movies on Prime. These are the movies that we have seen over and over and are our favorites. All of them are on my Amazon profile, so it’s a mix of “yours, mine, and ours” or “Josh’s, mine, and ours”.

Now, don’t get me wrong, we still have our massive dvd collection. Back in the day, our Friday nights involved eating dinner and then going to Best Buy to buy a dvd. Most of the time we had never seen the movie. It was kind of like renting a movie, except we kept it forever when we were done. Some of the movies on our Amazon list are ones that we also own on dvd. We don’t have our dvd player hooked up. Though we still do have one. I’m just paranoid enough about technology that I am not 100% convinced the internet will always exist. And if something happens to technology in the future, assuming we still have the means for power, dvds will keep us entertained. Also, if you’ve ever seen the Netflix movie, “Leave the World Behind” you’ll kind of get where I’m coming from. Remember where the daughter was in the last scene of the movie? (If you haven’t seen it, in the middle of a civil war apocalypse, the daughter ran off and found someone’s bomb shelter in their basement and found a dvd copy of Friends. The internet went out just as she was trying to watch the last episode of the series for the first time. She spent the whole movie lamenting over whehter or not Rachel got off the plane. Her family was frantic looking for her and yet there she was. Once it was revealed that’s where she was, the movie cut to the end credits. Obviously, the whole movie was a social commentary on our dependence on technology and other stuff like that).

With that said, eventually, I want to make sure I have a dvd copy of each of the movies on this list.

For each movie, I’ll also include whose movie it is…Josh’s, mine, or ours together.

These are listed in order of purchase date:

  1. Tron (ours-sort of, we don’t watch it much but bought it so I could see the original)
  2. You’ve Got Mail (mine, already have the dvd)
  3. Heaven is for Real (mine, only watched it once after I read the book)
  4. Frozen (mine, bought it so I’d know what the fuss with the students at school was all about, only watched it once)
  5. The Devil Wears Prada (mine, already have the dvd)
  6. The Peanuts Movie (mine, bought it to watch with the kids at school, only watched it once)
  7. Life of Pi (mine, bought it after reading the book, only watched it once)
  8. The Giver (mine, bought it after reading the book and to watch it with my 6th graders because I taught the book each year and the movie version of the book is trash, although I enjoy Jeff Bridges as the titular character. The kids got a kick out of Taylor Swift having a part in it).
  9. Julie & Julia (mine)
  10. Despicable Me 3 (mine, bought it to watch with the kids at school before Disney+ became a thing)

  19. Solo: A Star Wars Movie (Josh’s, I still haven’t seen it all the way through)
  20. Boys and Girls (ours, sort of, bought it to watch on our anniversary one year because it was the movie we saw together on our first date)
  21. Signs (ours, have it on dvd, though it’s wearing out from use)
  22. Tombstone (ours)
  23. Super 8 (ours, have the dvd)
  24. John Wick 3 (ours)
  25. Holes (mine, bought it for the students, I used to teach this book in 6th grade in every year. The author of the book wrote the screenplay for the movie).
  26. The Gentlemen (ours)
  27. The Help (mine)
  28. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (ours)
  29. Predator (Josh’s…Predator is to Josh, what You’ve Got Mail is to me)

  40. Sleepless in Seattle (mine)
  41. John Wick 4 (ours)
  42. Beerfest (ours)
  43. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (ours, though we still haven’t finished watching it the first time through)
  44. Office Christmas Party (ours)
  45. Paul (ours)
  46. Dune: Part Two (Josh’s)
  47. Dirty Dancing (mine, have it on dvd)
  48. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (ours)
  49. The Accountant (mine, but really ours)
  50. The Watch (ours)
  51. Deadpool & Wolverine (ours)
  52. Game Night (ours)
  53. Appaloosa (Josh’s)
  54. Pitch Perfect (mine)
  55. Pitch Perfect 2 (mine–the third one is an abomination, I won’t watch it, it’s bad)
  56. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Josh’s)
  57. When Harry Met Sally (mine)
  58. Nobody 2 (ours)
  59. Super Troopers (ours)

  63. Conan the Destroyer (Josh’s–bought these two for him for his birthday this year, and a Conan t-shirt)

  65. Predator: Badlands (Josh’s)
  66. Crazy, Stupid, Love (mine, but Josh watches too)
  67. Dogma (ours, we had it on VHS which would have been good if I kept it when the whole Harvey Weinstein fiasco happened with the rights to it and it couldn’t be bought anywhere).
  68. Miss Congeniality (mine)
  69. Project Hail Mary (mine, but we saw it in the theater together and he often watches it when I have it on)
  70. Normal (ours–love me some Bob Odenkirk in serious, badass roles)
  71. Little Miss Sunshine (mine, but we both love it, Alan Arkin’s character especially, “Every night it’s f***in’ chicken!”)

My apologies for the long list. I didn’t realize it was this long. Amazon really needs to not put purchases in one long horizontal line. With 71 movies, it takes some time to scroll over to watch You’ve Got Mail. They need to put it in a grid like when you search for something.

Anyway, that’s our list. For now. Until we add more.

  1. Good list. I was questioning some of Josh’s choices but only from a girlie stand point, until I saw Close Encounters, which I have liked since I saw it as a kid. He gets a pass on all the typical guy movies lol, besides Neil makes me watch those too.

    1. Hey, all I’m saying about Josh’s choices, if we really have to go back to dvds, I’m going to play dumb, “What do you mean I didn’t get dvds of those two Conan movies? I swear I thought I did!”

      1. Girl, I like your thinking.

  2. Your #57 is my #2.

Love that you have Pitch Perfects 1&2. Three was a train wreck.

I have to tell you – I’m a worrier about the World Wide Web going kablooey.

    1. Can you believe it…I only just saw #57 for the first time last year! That’s why it’s not further down.

I just feel twitchy that so much of our lives depend on the internet. With how volatile the world is right now, it could be hacked and taken down, any number of things. I’m starting to be very leery about stuff like that.

      1. Me too. I’m not politically charged at all but I do worry that it could go off the rails quickly. Ugh!

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
