This post is not related to my Music/Movie Monday theme. It’s not related to the daily prompt about my first video game (Pac Man on an Atari with one of my cousins, I think). Today, I’m thinking about vitamins and supplements…and my grandma.
Yesterday I was filling my pill boxes for the week. One for the morning and one for nighttime. Aside from the daily prescription medications I put in there, I also added my multivitamin for “women over 40”. I put my black cohosh supplement in there for the morning and night. That helps with the perimenopause symptoms. Then I put in the D3+K2, which I had been taking, but sort of stopped when I ran out. My last blood work shows that I am low on vitamin D, so back into the pill boxes it goes. I also added a biotin supplement because I’m trying to grow my hair out, and now my nails too. I tried press on nails recently and liked the length but was perpetually afraid of popping one off. I saw a woman with beautiful nails on Threads and they were all her own. So I’m growing mine out a little so I can have the effect of fancy press-on nails while sporting my own natural nails. Josh recommended I start taking biotin if I’m going to do all that. In that went too.
It got me thinking about my grandma. When I was a kid, she lived on the other side of the duplex my parents and I lived in. I was over at her house quite often. If I spent the night, or was over there in the morning, I would often sit with her at the kitchen table (which I am in possession of). She would bring out her vitamin canister. I tried so hard to find a picture of it online, but couldn’t find the exact one she had. The closest I could find was this:

The top rotated around so that each section of the container would be open, one at a time, and you could pour out the vitamin in that section. Her container must have had at least six sections. I think the one in the picture does too. She would shake on out and tell me what it was and what it was for. She’d make a little pile on the green, flowered placemat. Then, and this still amazes me, she’d put that whole little pile of vitamins in her mouth and swallow it all with one tiny sip of coffee from her mug. I need at least half a glass of water to get all of my medicine down. Grandma only needed a small sip.
I’m nowhere near my grandma’s age when I would be an observer to her morning vitamin ritual. I’m closer to the age my parents were at that time. But, the supplements have started anyway. I suppose that’s not a bad thing. Taking them now could prevent health issues in the future. Or not. Time will tell.
