What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever found (and kept)?
I’m going to take the shallow route with this answer today. My first thought was to say that my husband is the coolest thing, and he really is. I intend to keep him forever. But if I’m thinking about a specific “thing” as the prompt suggests, I’m answering with my Jim Carrey autographed magazine.
Please don’t ask me to explain why I was obsessed with Jim Carrey. I just was. Maybe it had to do with seeing “Ace Ventura” for the first time when I was 12 years old and being enamored with the crude jokes given that I was 12 and just as immature. Whatever the reason, I was just a super dorky, devoted fan. Because of that, I knew that Jim Carrey is from Toronto and that’s where he got his start in stand-up comedy and a small tv show. Fast forward from middle-school-aged me to just-graduated-college-and-got-my-first-teaching-job me. On the fan website I followed, a lady was auctioning off a magazine that he had autographed. This was no ordinary magazine. This lady had met Jim Carrey in Canada when he was just starting out. This was a Canadian magazine that he was on the cover of. Young and pimply faced and a long way from “In Living Color” or “Ace Ventura”. She even had pictures of her meeting with him where you can see him holding the magazine so you know it’s authentic.
Seeing this holy grail of Jim Carrey memorabilia caused me to spend a portion of one of my first meager teaching paychecks to get the highest bid on the magazine. That magazine is still sitting in the cardboard packing envelope it was sent in, but one day I’ll get it professionally framed. I’m really not as big of a fan anymore. I’ll still watch his movies, though I can no longer say I’ve seen them all. But I still think that magazine is one of the coolest items I found and still own.
