What part of your routine do you always try to skip if you can?

Such a weird question! First of all, if I’m always trying to skip it, is it really a routine?

Given that I have a full-time job, my routine from Monday-Friday is getting up and going to work. I’d love to skip that but I can’t really try to skip it. I do have to go to work. Instead, I try to stay in bed for as long as possible. My work commute is one minute, two if there’s traffic. Seriously, it’s three tenths of a mile from my house to the building I work in. If I leave the house with five minutes to spare, I can be at my office with 2-3 minutes to spare. I can really push the limits of staying in bed on work days. My husband was particularly bothered yesterday when he was off and I had to work. He knows what time I have to be at work and he also saw what time it was when he saw me still in bed. He has a commute that is about an hour and a half one way. My commute disgusts him. I get it. It would irritate me too.

Another routine is eating. And I do actively try to skip that. The medicine I take only makes me hungry for lunch, which I eat. But then when it’s dinner time, I find that I’m stuck in the mindset of it being dinner time and I should be eating dinner, but I’m just not hungry. Sometimes I do eat a little bit because, again, it’s that time. My mind says it’s time to eat. But I know better. I’ve learned that listening to my body is the best way to go. So I try to skip dinner because I know my body doesn’t need it. I also know that depending on what I eat, I will likely wake up in the middle of the night with a very upsest stomach if I do eat.

As far as other routines, like my nightly routine of sitting on the couch and watching t.v. with my husband, I don’t ever try to skip any part of that. I need that routine. My anxiety depends on it.

Routines just aren’t real routines, I think, if you skip a part of it. That skipped part will eventually form a new routine. Which isn’t bad. Routines are really just a part of life. There would be too much of a feeling of chaos if certain actions weren’t repeated at some point. I know my nervous system certainly wouldn’t like it. Certainly as much as I don’t like getting up and going to work every day.

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
