The snowpocalypse is not supposed to be so snowy after all. Mostly a mix of freezing rain and sleet, which is actually worse. And for my part of the state, we may have some plain cold rain mixed in. So not as bad as other parts of the state and certainly not as bad as initially thought.
I was thinking about the impacts this storm could have on work next week. I still maintain that anything to distract me until the day of my job interview is a good thing. I’m very eager for my interview because as I’ve said, I’m quite eager to quit my job.
But I don’t think I’m eager to quit my job for the same reasons I was. This week hasn’t been bad. The same people are irritating me and they really are on my lists of reasons I want to quit. Something else came to mind today though. I kind of just want to do something different.
I did the same thing for 19 years. When I was job searching after leaving that job, I had the best time thinking about all the other things I could possibly do for a job. I had never let myself think of doing anything other than teaching. It was fun to think of other possibilities. Did I ever mention that I applied to work at the county library as someone who delivered books to senior citizens who were homebound? How neat would that have been?!
I know I haven’t been at my current job for very long, but already, I really don’t want to do it anymore. I’ve said before that it’s just a job, it’s not a career. But I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting a job that’s interesting to me. This job is pretty routine and mundane…until the summer when that kids program I supervise keeps me busy and exhausted for two and a half months. I don’t want to do that again this year though.
I’m not retirement age yet and I’m not close to being a bestselling author, so I still need to work. Certainly it’s o.k. that I work a variety of jobs until either of those two things happen. There’s an editing job I applied for. That would be way awesome to get hired for that! I could absolutely add that to my writing resume. I even applied to work the front desk at the tattoo shop where I’ve gotten my most recent tattoos. That would be ridiculously cool to do that! If I have to work, why not make it interesting? Even this job that I have the interview for…it’s at another college, but it’s a different position and in a different department than the one I work in now.
I don’t like changes to my routine so I wouldn’t job hop very often, but I don’t think sticking to one job until I retire or sell a bunch of my writing or become a monetized content creator on social media is what I want to do. Unless I end up really liking the job or it pays a salary worth the boredom.
A lot of inspirational sayings start with “Life’s too short to….” Here’s my contribution to that. Life’s too short to keep working a job you don’t like. Or maybe, life’s too short to not see what’s out there. Or something. I think you get what I mean.
