If you had to give one life-changing tip, what would it be?

“Something Good” Sunday

Life-changing, huh? I don’t know that this would change your life, but I think for me, it’s a non-negotiable. And that is, make sure you take time to do things that you want to do. It’s so easy to get bogged down with the things you have to do or things that other people want to do, but it’s important that you always, always do things for yourself and that make you happy.

This ties into my Sunday theme of sharing something good from the week. This past Friday was the last day at work for the summer where we could leave at 12:00. Half-day Fridays during the summer goes from the end of May to the end of July. There was a local, minor league baseball game that evening that our students were scheduled to attend. A bunch of faculty and staff were going too and for a while, I had tickets for Josh and I to go as well. I wanted to see one of the “kids” throw out the first pitch and then enjoy the game. I decided though, that with our last half day, I didn’t want to get out early and then come back to a work event that evening. So I gave my tickets away and since Josh had been off this week, we took a drive to Cary and Raleigh.

I googled and found an independent bookstore that also sold “beautiful things” according to the name of the bookstore. The store was next door to a tattoo shop, which is kind of ironic given that the people shopping in the bookstore looked like the kind of people who were thinking judgy thoughts about me and my heavily tattooed arms that were visible in my tanktop. The particular city we were in also lent itself to the notion that people are jugy. Regardless, I got a few new treasures from the store.

I thought I had a copy of The Catcher in the Rye, but apparently not. I got a copy to add to my TBR pile. I also got the Ray Bradbury book to read during spooky season. He’s a great storyteller for sure. I have read some of his short stories and last year or the year before, I read Fahrenheit 451, which is as relevant today as it was back when it was published.

I also got some other goodies. The socks, because…well, it’s true. I’ll send the card to one of my fellow lady friends who are suffering. And the bookmark is for Josh since he’s a reader too.

After the bookstore, we went across the street to a bakery that we hadn’t been to in years. Many, many years ago we visited the same bakery at a different location and bought a couple white chocolate mini-baguettes. You wouldn’t think white chocolate belongs in bread, or anywhere really, but omg! These baguettes imprinted a core memory into us and we have not been able to stop thinking about them since. So we obviously had to go into the bakery and up front as soon as you come in, they had boxes of a dozen of those baguettes. We immediately bought a box and tore into them in the car. So good!

We went to another store that Josh wanted to go to. After that we went to the state farmer’s market where I bought two overpriced jars of pickled beets and dill pickle spears. We got dinner on the way home and then enjoyed the rest of our evening on the couch watching t.v. as we always do.

Our little adventure to the cities north of us was a fun way to spend an afternoon. It was something we both wanted to do becasue we didn’t want to sit at home all day. And that’s important because again…you really need to make sure you take time to do things that you want to do. Today I’m going to finish the laundry, which I hate doing, but I’m also getting a pedicure later this morning, something I need but also love to get. Not everybody has the same amount of time to do the things they want, and that’s o.k. Just be sure to find the time. Whether it’s a small thing or a big thing you do, just do it.

Middle-aged Maverick is indeed middle-aged and she’s proud of it. She has a tendency to over think and over analyze many of the things she encounters in her life, as evidenced in many of her posts. She knows how to drive a stick-shift car, prefers Coke over Pepsi, and spent many of her adolescent years being obsessed with Jim Carrey.
