What are your morning rituals? What does the first hour of your day look like?
Am I supposed to have a morning ritual? What is my first hour supposed to look like? Because really, if the hour starts from the moment I wake up and acknowledge that it’s the morning, that hour, if it’s a work day, consists of hitting the snooze button twice. Snooze is a little more than 8 minutes. When I get out of bed, I immediately cover the bed with a giant sheet of painter’s plastic because my senior kitty, Faye, has kidney issues and can’t hold her bladder anymore. So if I don’t cover the bed, by the time I’m ready to get back in it that night, she’ll have left a pee spot for me. My husband and I have determined that she doesn’t even realize she’s doing it. I guess that’s how it is when you’re slow stepping toward your 19th birthday this year.
After I cover the bed, I go into the living room and lay on the couch under a blanket and Ethan, our rescue dog who feels the only way to sit on the couch is to lay on top of somebody. I lay there until my husband is ready to leave for work. That’s when I get up and make him a to-go cup full of iced tea. He gives the dogs their daddy’s-going-to-work-but-he’s-going-to-miss-you treats and then leaves. That’s when I get back on the couch under Ethan and sometimes Millie. I sort of watch the morning news while we lay there. I usually set the alarm on my phone for about 20 minutes. After which I get up again to take a shower and go to work myself.
That’s it. That’s my first hour. If it’s the weekend, my first hour is basically the same. I don’t wake up to an alarm clock, but when I do wake up, instead of moving to the living room to lay underneath the dogs, I stay in bed and scroll my phone (or read a book) underneath Faye who is the feline equivalent of Ethan when it comes to the need to be physically close to me.
If I had to sum up my morning ritual with one word, it would be laziness. Pure laziness. There was exactly one day when I got up and went running before work. Haven’t done it since. There’s plenty of time for all sorts of productive things like that in the morning. I just don’t want to do them and much prefer staying horizontal for as long as possible. I really can’t be the only one who’s like that? Right?
